Skil 1810 1-3/4 HP Fixed Base Router

Product Description

Amazon.com Review
There's no tool like a router for edging, trimming or cutting. Skil's new 1-3/4 horsepower fixed-base router can perform all the functions needed in a home workshop or on the job site while drawing only 9 amps at full RPM. The 1/4-inch quick-change collet accepts a wide range of bits and cutters. The Skil 1810's Micro-Fine Depth Adjustment makes bit depth adjustments fast, easy and accurate while the soft-grip handles are ergonomically designed for comfort and ease of use. The wide base opening allows for quick and easy bit changes. Accepts Skil's 91018 18-Piece Carbide Router Bit Set as well as most other brands of 1/4-inch bits.
Ideal for woodworkers, hobbyists, carpenters and cabinet makers.
Applications: mortising hinge plates or inlays, dovetailing cabinet drawers or edging counter tops, making cabinets or shelves, decorative or inlay work, manufacturing wood trim for cabinets, rooms, doors or windows. --C. Dwight Barnett

Customer Reviews

This is a good entry level router so long as it is used upright. Inverting the router under a table will create issues. The main problem is that the clamp does not have the sufficient strength to hold at a fixed depth when it's inverted. After taking great pains to adjust the depth, you will find that as soon as you turn the router on, the depth will change. Also, since the router is trigger-operated, you will have to engage the trigger lock when it's inverted under a table. The trigger lock is a pretty flimsy piece of plastic, and it didn't take more than a couple of days for mine to break. Once that happens it will have to be repaired before it can be used under a table again.
My advice: buy Bosch.

I will echo the complaints of other reviewers who say that the depth on this router is hard to adjust with any degree of accuracy (the depth gauge is not fixed and the manual gives directions for changing the depth on a different model) and, once set, the router will not hold its depth. Sadly I did not notice this was happening until I had cut straight through the lumber I was dadoing into the workbench below, damaging a bit in the process.
A router that will not hold its depth is basically worthless, if not outright dangerous.
