Customer Reviews
I've had several M12V routers and none were better for router table work Apparently Hitachi had a better idea and discontinued manufacturing and replaced it with the M12VE, whereby ruining the collet arrangement. The M12V used a double wrench system without having to use a self extracting collet. Very easy to use and fast. The new system uses a self extracting type collet but fails to supply the correct collet with the router. The supplied collet is lose from it's holder and ground under size. It is nearly impossible to get standard 1/2" tools into the collet. Once they are in and tightened down the collet jams into the receiver and will not come lose because of the chozen taper. That is why the need for a self extracting collet which requires one to loosen the nut while holding a lock pin, then to unscrew the holder several turns at which point the wrench must be used again to extract the collet from the holder. If this is a bit techy for you, just bare in mind it is no longer user friendly.
Very good router. Great power, I have been making raised panels and was using a small router (1-3/4 HP) with a 3-1/2" raised panel bit with under-cutter. The small router and the big bit are not a good combination so I started looking around for a larger router and found the Hitachi M12VE. This is a new model and is based on the old M12V, it is not like the Hitachi routers that people say looked like a tennis shoe or space ship. After shopping around for the best price I found one for $196.99 at ToolBarn.com and ordered it December 2010. I have been using it in my router table making more raised panels and it has been great. It has a variable speed adjustment knob that is easily accessible which is needed when to get the RPM down to 10'000 or 12,000 RPM when running the large diameter bit. There is no bogging down and stopping like my other router would do. I was also very surprised at how quiet it is.
There are nice features like 3 position adjustable handle knobs, a slide on-off switch, it is a plunge router, comes with a carry case, and more. It also has a 5-year warranty.
This is a very good router.
